How Long Does It Take to Create and Install a Headstone?

One of the most common questions families ask when planning a cemetery memorial is:“How long does the process take?”And it’s a fair question—especially when you're trying to bring closure and honor a loved one properly. The truth is, creating and installing a headstone involves more steps than most people realize. It’s not just about carving a name into stone; it’s about crafting a lasting tribute that reflects a life lived and a legacy left behind.
At Winchester Monument Company, we believe that every family deserves transparency, care, and excellence. In this post, we’ll walk you through the timeline from the first conversation to the final installation.
🕊️ Phase 1: The Design Consultation (1–7 Days)
Everything begins with a conversation. Whether you meet with us in person, over Zoom, or by phone, this is when we’ll:
Listen to your family’s story
Learn about the cemetery’s rules and regulations
Discuss design options (shape, size, color, inscriptions, emblems, photos)
Present sketches or digital mockups
Timeline Tip: The sooner you begin the conversation, the sooner the design process can start. Waiting months after a funeral is normal—but reaching out earlier can help avoid unnecessary delays.
🛠️ Phase 2: Finalizing the Design (3–10 Days)
Once you’ve reviewed the design draft, we’ll make adjustments and finalize the artwork. Families often want to:
Add a special quote or scripture
Include a photo or custom engraving
Choose specific lettering styles
Once the proof is approved in writing, we move to production.
⛏️ Phase 3: Stone Sourcing and Engraving (4–12 Weeks)
This is where the bulk of the time occurs—and for good reason.
Granite Availability
Most headstones are made of granite. While we stock popular colors and sizes locally, unique colors or custom shapes may need to be ordered from out of state or even internationally.
In-stock granite: May move into engraving quickly
Special-order granite: Can take 4–8 weeks to arrive
Engraving & Craftsmanship
Once the granite is in our shop, we begin engraving or laser etching. This step takes time and precision, especially if:
There are photo-realistic images involved
The monument includes detailed artwork or etchings
Dual monuments are being created for future use
Estimated Time in Shop: 2–3 weeks depending on complexity and queue
⛪ Phase 4: Cemetery Coordination & Installation (1–3 Weeks)
Before we install the monument, we coordinate with the cemetery to ensure everything meets their guidelines. This includes:
Verifying foundation specs
Scheduling access for our equipment
Preparing or pouring a foundation if needed
Installation Timeline:
Simple settings may be installed within a few days
Rural or remote cemeteries may require more time due to weather, access, or cemetery scheduling
📅 Total Timeline: What to Expect
Step | Estimated Time |
Design Consultation & Edits | 1–2 weeks |
Stone Sourcing | 0–8 weeks |
Engraving & Finishing | 2–3 weeks |
Installation | 1–3 weeks |
Total Time | 4–12 weeks (on average) |
Note: Custom monuments, special shapes, or out-of-stock granite can extend this to 16+ weeks.
** Special Import Granite Can Take Up to Six Months to Arrive in Port
Pro Tip: Start Sooner Than You Think
Many families wait until months after the funeral to start the monument process—but early planning can reduce stress and give your family more options. If your loved one chose cremation, starting early allows time to design a meaningful marker or memorial bench.
